Fuel Analysis
TRIP AVERAGE 142.92 MILES PER GALLON
Fuel Stops:
Start 3.8 gallons
Victorville 1.22
Bridgeport 1.82
Susanville 1.63
Bend 1.65
Elderberry Inn (outside Seaside OR) 1.57
Shelton 1.65
Including the original full tank at 3.8 gallons, that leaves a total of 13.34 gallons
Draining the tank left me with 2.1 gallons remaining at the end of the trip, for a total fuel consumption of 11.24 gallons
Total mileage of 1606.51 (including 40+ miles never recorded on the odometer when both speedometer and Veypor computer were not functioning, and includes 6.4 miles travelled beyond the completion of the trip (the return from the ferry to my parents house in San Juan Island)
For an average fuel consumption of 142.92 miles per gallon. It appears the last section of the trip showed the lowest mpg ratings; possibly because of cold, wet conditions in the last two days ... coupled with a tendency to go faster towards the end of the trip!
Analysis: If I had had the patience to go much slower, and actually had averaged 31 mph instead of a regular speed nearer 42 mph, I could have maintained a higher efficiency rating. I also missed opportunities to turn the bike engine off (waiting at some flagged road construction areas) and I could also have been more efficient and turned off the engine at road stops etc... As I got further north, I tended to let the engine run longer before starting as it was harder to start as the temperatures dropped. A cold starting technique using a shot of WD40 might also have improved efficiency.
My highest recorded figure was 171 mpg on mostly flat straight highway in central and northern California.
